Naturally Dyed with Onion Skins

This collection of material and color exploration all derives from the fragility and beauty of an onion skin. The several layers of line, color and texture within the skins of both onions and garlics I have always found really beautiful. Using elastic yarns in combination with cotton yarns I was able to create new textures and ripples of knit fabric. I then decided to dye some of my knits in an onion skin dye bath. Using ladders and variations of stitch sizes I layered several knits on top of one another to create a transparent, textural material. My intention was to take the fragility of an onion skin and turn it into a flexible and strong textile that still has the appearance of delicacy.
